Process for measuring carbon monoxide gas-material exchange processes and the transpiration of intact plants at a natural site comprises using filtered air from the plant site through two analyzers and comparing the results. Air (1 l/minute) is pumped from the surroundings of the plant in a first absolute analyzer (3) which simultaneously measures the CO2 and H2O concentrations of the pumped air. The air is then fed via a first valve (4) having a very low flow resistance via a gas-material exchange chamber (7) and a second valve (8) having a very low flow resistance into a second absolute analyzer (9), and then aligned with the analyzer with respect to the measuring deviations. The air leaving the exchange chamber is measured and the measuring results from the first (3) and a second analyzer (9) are fed to a computer to calculate the CO2 exchange and transpiration rates of the plant in the chamber. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the measuring process.
