The method involves searching the surface of a postal item with an address block location or ABL system to locate address blocks for analysis with an optical character recognition or OCR device. A connection is made between the OCR and ABL systems to enable all results from one of the two systems to be passed to the other for processing. Independent claims are also included for a system, a program, an automatic sorting machine and a computer program product for implementing the method.
