Production of a coating on a refractory component comprises using a precious metal alloy having a melting temperature of more than 1400 deg C and formed from platinum, iridium, rhodium, rhenium and/or gold. Production of a coating on a refractory component comprises using a precious metal alloy having a melting temperature of more than 1400 deg C and formed from platinum (Pt), iridium (Ir), rhodium (Rh), rhenium (Re) and/or gold (Au). The component is coated with the alloy powder. The alloy has a liquidus temperature TL of 900-1400 deg C and contains 84-99.5 wt.% precious metal and 0.5-16 wt.% oxidizable substance selected from born (B), phosphorus (P), antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As). The component and the coating are heated in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to a temperature T which is higher or the same as the liquidus temperature TL of the alloy. The oxidizable substance is oxidized and the oxide produced is partially vaporized. The temperature T is maintained for a period so that the amount of oxidizable substance in the coating is less than 0.1 at.%. The coated component is subsequently cooled. Preferred Features: The refractory component is made from alumina (Al2O3), silica (SiO2), zirconia (ZrO2), zirconium silicate or aluminum silicate.
