The method involves detecting heart pacemaker pulses in an ECG waveform by acquiring an analogue waveform, analyzing the waveform to produce first heart pacemaker markings, analyzing time matching information and energy content of the first markings to eliminate false pacemaker markings, digitizing the analogue waveform to produce digital ECG data, analyzing the digital data to produce second markings and comparing the first and second markings. Independent claims are also included for a patient monitoring system and for a software program for a patient monitoring system.
