The side impact protection device has an impact sensor element(20) through which an impact by an object on a longitudinal side of the vehicle is detected and a signal characteristic for the impact is generated. The impact signal is transmitted to a control unit. A side stabilizing element(12a,12B), when an impact signal is transmitted through the control unit, is transferred in pulse form from a neutral position to an activated position in which a stabilizing side element(18A,18B) of the vehicle is supported by the side stabilizing element. Independent claims are included for the passenger cell of a motor vehicle which is equipped with the proposed side impact protection device, and for a procedure for side impact detection using the proposed system.
