The invention concerns a method for assessing the condition of an electrode surface in a spot welding machine, characterised in that it consists in measuring the impedance of a volume at the surface of said electrode portion adjacent to the part likely to be in contact with the component to be welded. The invention also concerns a spot welding machine using said method.
