The fault detection system stores (7) fault data gathered from computers (22-5) controlling equipment fitted to motor vehicles. Each of these computers controls and diagnoses faults in their associated equipment. The stored fault data includes fault identification information (8), fault chronology information (9) and information on the operating state of the vehicle when the fault is detected and when normal operation returns.
