A microcomputer (7) receives humidity and temperature data (2,3), user vehicle speed (5) and distance to a preceding vehicle (6) from an infra red laser telemeter. An alarm is triggered if a collision is likely to take place but is prevented if the user vehicle is signaling a change in direction (8) or modified to take account of shorter stopping distances if fog lights are operating.
