The invention relates to an electronic device and a remote device that cooperate to activate an electronic device's display when a distance between the electronic device and the remote device is less than a transmission range and to disable the display when the distance is greater than the transfer range. Disabling the electronic device display can improve data security on the display. In addition, deactivation and activation of the display can be performed automatically, thereby possibly preventing the authorized user from leaving the system or turning off the electronic device to protect the display. When the authorized user carries the remote device, the display can be activated and deactivated when the user moves in relation to the electronic device. The electronic device display can be activated when the electronic device and the remote device are located within a first distance and the display is disabled when the remote device is located a second distance from the remote device, the second distance being greater than than the first distance. For example, when the user wears the remote device, the display is activated when the user is within a first distance from the electronic device. When the user carries the remote device a second greater distance from the electronic device, the display is activated.
