Combined oestrogen and progestin prepn. comprises: (a) unit doses of dominant oestrogen activity; and (b) unit doses of dominant progestin activity. The oestrogen is natural or synthetic and is pref. 17-alpha-ethenybestradiol (Ia) or its esters or ethers, conjugated equine oestrogens, 17-beta-oestradiol (Ib), oestradiol valerate, oestrone, oestrone sulphate, piperazine oestrone sulphate (Ic) oestriol, oestriol succinate, polyoestrol phosphate, ethenyl oestradiol, menstranol or quinestranol. The progestin is progesterone, 17-hydroxy progesterone esters, 17-nor-17-hydroxy progesterone esters, 17alpha-ethinyl testosterone, 17alpha-ethinyl-10-nor-testosterone, or their derivs., norethindrone, norethindrone acetate, ethynodiol diacetate, dydrogesterone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, norethynodrel, allylestrenol, lynoestrenol, quingestanol acetate, medrogestrone, norgestrienone, dimethisterone, ethisterone, cyproterone, cyproterone acetate, levonorgestrel, d-norgestrel, dl-norgestrel, d-17-beta-acetoxy-13-beta-ethyl -17-alpha-ethinyl-gon -4-en-3-one oxime, gestodene, norgestimate or desogestrel and is esp. norethindrone (IIa) or norgestimate for contraceptives or progesterone for hormone replacement.
