The communication system (4) for the exchange of data comprises a terminal (1) for reception and transmission of data and at least one chip holder (2) provided with at least one releasably coupled memory chip (3). The chip holder has transmission and reception facilities for exchange of data with the terminal and the memory chip. The terminal has a local reception and transmission range. The terminal and the chip card holder communicate in a radio frequency range of 125 kHz to 13.56 MHz. The reception and transmission range of the terminal is preferably 4 meters. The memory chip is a part of the chip card.
