The apparatus includes a seat (20) and a back support (10) disposed to form an open area (11) in between in which the person is not supported, when located in the apparatus. The seat and back support are movable between a position in which major proportion of the person's weight is carried by the seat or by the back support. The open area is formed between a rear edge (67) of the seat and lower edge (17) of the back support. The seat and back support are carried by a frame whose lower region forms a chassis provided with wheels. The seat includes a forward portion and a rear seat portion provided for the patient's thighs by which the forward portion is movable between a position in which the front portion supports the lower regions of the thighs and the rear portion supports the upper regions of the thighs and another position in which the front seat portion is displaced form the rear seat portion in order to hold up the lower portions of thighs and release the upper portions of thighs from the rear seat portion. The rear seat portion and the back support are journalled to adjust the inclination of the back support to an angle desirable for undressing, dressing or for access to the patient's lower abdominal area.
