The mechanical seal for a compressor comprises a support member (12) fixed to a rotary shaft (2) for rotating therewith, an annular rotating slide member (13) consisting of hard materials and being fitted to the support member (12) by shrinkage, and a stationary slide member (14) exerting pressure against an end surface of said rotating slide member (13). In order to prevent damage by shrinkage stress and a displacement of said rotating slide member (13), said rotating slide member (13) comprises at least one peripheral recess (27) formed by a portion of the periphery of said rotating slide member (13) having a smaller outer diameter than the rest of the periphery and said support member (12) comprises an inwardly extending fitting portion (23) engaging the peripheral recess (27).
