A method of classifying the aesthetic quality of planar materials, and including the steps of establishing (110) a number of aesthetic quality classes of the planar materials (2) by means of a number of parameters relating to the surface characteristics of the planar materials (2); assigning a reference range to each of the parameters of each aesthetic quality class; acquiring (120) a surface image of each of the planar materials (2) to be classified; processing (130) the surface image to obtain the values of the parameters which together characterize each of the aesthetic quality classes; and assigning (170) one of the aesthetic quality classes to each of the planar materials when the parameter values obtained in the step of processing the surface image have a predetermined relationship with the reference ranges of the aesthetic quality class.
