PURPOSE: A method for indexing, editing, and searching moving picture data on the Internet is provided to perform a systematical management through a database by making moving picture data into meta data of a long and short unit, and transmit moving picture data and extract/transmit only moving picture portion through the Internet in real time. CONSTITUTION: If a user who wishes to index, edit, and search moving picture data performs an indexing, editing, and searching process through a user interface constituted by a web environment, a search engine and a writing engine change the input into a query language based on meta data and transmit the input to a multimedia DBMS and return a result of the query to the user interface. At this time, actual moving picture data are distributed over file servers of various kinds or an NAS(Network Attached Storage) on the Internet. The multimedia DBMS stores only a position of moving picture data, bibliography information, and segmentation information necessary for a searching process. If a searching and indexing job is started from the user, a channel and information necessary for a real time transmission are inputted to a WMT(Window Media Technology) through the meta data stored in the multimedia DBMS. Thus, a real time transmitting job is performed.
