The system has a wheel brake, an actuator and an anti-lock device in a main brake line with a pump for generating a further brake fluid pressure. One arrangement specifies a vehicle deceleration threshold. Another detects one or more parameters describing the vehicle's deceleration characteristic. The antilock device is switched so that additional pressure is fed into the main brake line if a deceleration threshold is exceeded. The system has a wheel brake (3), an actuator (5,7), a main brake line transferring bake fluid pressure from a main cylinder (5) to the wheel brake and an anti-lock device (4) in the main line (10) with a pump (9) for generating a further brake fluid pressure. One arrangement specifies a vehicle deceleration threshold. Another detects one or more parameters describing the vehicle's deceleration characteristic. A device that detects when the threshold is exceeded using the detected parameter(s) switches the antilock device so that additional pressure is fed into the main brake line if the threshold is exceeded.
