A method for the controlled living radical polymerization of radically-polymerizable vinyl monomers in aqueous solution, in which at least one component selected from monomer(s), initiator and radical trapping species is complexed with a cyclodextrin. A method for the production of polymers by controlled living radical polymerization in aqueous solution, in which at least one component selected from (A) radically polymerizable monomer(s) of formula (I), (II) and/or (III), (B) initiator and (C) radical trapping species (RTS) is complexed with cyclodextrin. R1, R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R2 = H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl in the o-, m- or p-position, COOM, SO3M or 1-4C alkoxy; M = H or alkali metal; R4 = 1-4C alkyl or the residue of a 2-18C monocarboxylic acid; X = CN, COOR5, CONR6R7 or COR8; R5 = 1-18C alkyl, optionally substituted with OH, OR5 or NR6R7; R6, R7 = H or 1-18C alkyl, or the two groups together may form a 5-12C cycloalkyl group; and R8 = 1-18C alkyl or 5-12C cycloalkyl.
