The steering system has a steering wheel (2), a steering setting drive (21), a setting device (11) which is coupled to the steering wheel, with a switched coupling between the steering wheel and the steered vehicle wheels (25,26) and a control (8) for the steering system allowing switching between a normal operating mode and an emergency operating mode. In the normal operating mode the switched coupling is disengaged and the setting device acts on the steering wheel for providing a simulated steering resistance and in the emergency operating mode the switched coupling is engaged for controlling the steered wheels via the steering wheel, the setting device acting as a steering servo, using a control signal provided by the control in dependence on the steering torque.
