The method involves driving at least one steering actuator (15) controlling the steered wheel (17) position depending on the position of a steering wheel (1), driving an electrical feedback actuator (7) depending on the forces transferred from the road to the steered wheels, monitoring the function of the steer-by-wire system, changing to reversionary mode if it fails and operating the feedback actuator and/or steering actuator to reduce the forces or torques to be transferred from the driver to the steering wheel. Independent claims are also included for the following: a computer program for implementing the method, a controller and a steer-by-wire system.
