Method for activating vehicle occupant protection in which an approach velocity is determined and if it lies above a threshold value a predicted impact time is determined. A probability analysis is undertaken in which with the predicted impact time (Ta) within a range (T1, T2), the signal quality (S) of one or more approach sensors (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B), vehicle dynamics and collision object geometry are considered. According to the analysis outcome the protection device is activated. The invention also relates to a device for activating vehicle occupant protection systems using a probability or plausibility analysis.
