Device for controlling the pulse duration and/or pulse energy of a laser pulse in a passively Q-switched laser or for controlling the repetition rate of the individual pulses of the laser in continuous mode comprises a control mechanism for mechanically adjusting the Q-switch system (1). Preferred Features: Control is achieved by adjusting the low-level signal transmission of the Q-switch, by adjusting the effective amount of color centers of the Q-switch in the laser beam, by adjusting the effective amount of color centers as well as the low-level transmission of the Q-switch in the laser beam, or by adjusting the position of the Q-switch in the laser resonator. The laser medium has active ions of neodymium, holmium, thulium, erbium and/or chromium. The Q-switch is made of Cr4+: YAG or LiF2.
