The system has an electrical base unit (1) with a number of plug-in locations for reception of further plug-in electrical units (2), each provided with a multi-pin connector plug cooperating with a corresponding multi-pin connector socket provided by the base unit. The pin contacts of each multi-pin connector are divided into a first group (31) for connection to fixed configuration lines, used for identification of the plug-in unit, a second group (32) for connection to variable configuration lines for communication between the plug-in unit and the base unit and a third group (33) for connection to fixed configuration lines for communication of the plug-in unit with the base unit.
