Synthesis of magnesium bis(di(organo)amides) (I), comprises reacting metallic magnesium (Mg) with a hydrogen acceptor and a secondary amine in a polar, aprotic solvent. Synthesis of magnesium bis(di(organo)amides) of formula (I) involves reacting metallic magnesium (Mg) with a hydrogen acceptor (II) and a secondary amine (III) in a polar, aprotic solvent (IV): Mg(N(R1R2))2 (I) R1, R2 = 1-20 C alkyl, aryl or alkyl-substituted aryl, optionally combined to a ring.
