Motor vehicle (102) mounted device comprises a memory (106) for recording the vehicle state. The vehicle state at the time of the accident is determined with a state sensor (116) and a safety process triggering device that causes the memory to save values from the state sensor at the time of an accident. In addition cameras (112a-d; 114a-d) record images of the environment around the vehicle at the time of the accident that are then saved in memory. An Independent claim is made for a method for recording a vehicle state at the time of an accident.
