Household device clock (2) has a network power supply (6) and a clock timer component (8) connected to a battery (10) that generates an electrical timer signal at its output (14). A clock display (24) is connected to the timer output and produces an optical time indication (22). When the external power supply is lost the timer automatically takes power from the battery so that when external power is reconnected the time can again be immediately displayed.
