Method for detecting the presence of people in a predetermined area via a telecommunication network, whereby entry of a mobile part (PP1 to PP3) into the area determined by its radio range in relation to a fixed part (FP) of a wireless telecommunication system in accordance with the DECT standard or compliance of the handset within the room area and evaluated as presence signal, after obtaining the presence signal, the whereabouts or the activation of the handset in the area is checked by signal exchange processes between the handset and the fixed part and the presence signal is updated when the signal exchange is working or is deleted when the signal exchange is not working.
