Production of metals and their alloys and compound semiconductors comprises galvanically depositing metals, alloys or compound semiconductors from an ionic liquid or suitable molten salt in an electrolysis device at below 200 deg C, preferably 20-100 deg C. Preferred Features: The electrolyte is made from an ionic liquid containing one or more metal salts and one or more organic components. The metal salts are selected from metal or semiconductor halides, nitrates, perchlorates, fluorophosphates, sulfonates or acetyl acetonates. The organic components are selected from halides, fluorophosphates or sulfonates of imidazolium salts with methyl, ethyl, butyl, decyl, dodecyl or pyridine substituents.
