The device has suitable particles (size, size distribution, refractive indices, geometry,..) embedded in a material with suitable properties (transparency, dispersion,....) to cause a light effect in the room by scattering the incident light. Desired effects (polarization, dispersion,..) can be achieved by using special surface coatings on the embedded substance.
