The device (100) has a housing with a fuel inlet (106), an air inlet (104) and an outlet (116), an ignition source (112) mounted on the housing to cause ignition in part of a fuel-air mixture fed into the housing and an arrangement for rapid quenching to rapidly extinguish a combustion flame in a fuel-air mixture after ignition. The housing contains a mixing chamber and a combustion chamber. Independent claims are also included for the following: a Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition engine.
