The machine has several workstations, of which at least one is a workpiece loading and unloading station, and a rotary table carrying a number of workpiece bearers corresponding to the number of workstations. Each bearer can be positioned at each workstation in succession by stepwise table rotation. A drive arrangement enables stepwise rotation of the rotary table in one direction and continuous rotation without stopping in the opposite direction. The machine has several workstations (S1,S2,S3,..), of which at least one is a workpiece loading and unloading station, and a rotary table (10) carrying a number of workpiece bearers (14) corresponding to the number of workstations, whereby each bearer can be positioned at each workstation in succession by stepwise rotation of the table. The machine has a drive arrangement for stepwise rotation of the rotary table in one direction and continuous rotation without stopping in the opposite direction. Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of driving a rotary table in a transfer machine with several workstations.
