In a first charging cycle (2) up to the attainment of a defined charging voltage is charged with a constant charging current (5) and in a further, especially second charging cycle (3) is charged with successive energy pulses (11) so that the charging current is switched over periodically between a base charging current (12) and a pulse charging current (13). The pulse charging current is chosen equal or smaller than the charging current during the first charging cycle and the base charging current is fixed smaller than the pulse charging current.
