The method for adjusting the braking effect on the wheels of a vehicle which move on areas of the road with different coefficients of friction uses common adjusting systems (115, 116) which allow the braking effect on both wheels to be applied in two modes. In the select low mode adjustment is applied depending on the speed of rotation of the wheel moving over the surface with the lower friction and in the select high mode depending on the speed of rotation of the wheel moving over the surface with the higher friction. The retardation of the vehicle is determined and the select high mode is only applied when it exceeds a predetermined value. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the method.
