Edge optimization processor and method for its operation using user defined gray step input values, where binary data can be converted to gray step image data to reduce edge jaggedness in low resolution images

Image optimization processing device for improving a largely binary data image. At certain pixel points the binary data is changed so that it includes gray step image data to reduce image jaggedness. The device comprises a memory for storing pixel windows containing pixels to be examined using an examination processor according to several criteria and a decision processor that determines whether a binary pixel should be converted to a gray step pixel based on the examination data. A change element can be varied by the user to control the way jaggedness is changed using gray step pixel strength so that it conforms to user preferences. Independent claims are made for an edge optimization device for processing primarily binary data and for an edge improvement method.
