A virtual object (V) at a virtual distance from the eyes (A1,A2) of an observer are projected stereoscopically onto a display device. Fixing distance (E) between the observer's eyes and a real object is detected to calculate disparity (D) between the real and virtual objects. Using this calculated disparity changes the virtual distance of the virtual object from the observer's eyes so that any disparity is essentially removed.
