The co-ordinates of the machine e.g. excavator (102) are found and the position of the shovel etc tool (104) relative to the machine. Buried objects (108a,b) such as pipes, lines or service connections are also plotted in the site map, all in real time. The shovel is controlled from the machine using position signals toshow machine, shovel and buried objects positions in real time, preferably using a GPS system or ground-penetrating radar.
