The invention relates to a drive arrangement for face conveyors or plough systems, with drive units which each consist of an electric asynchronous motor (3) and overload-protection gearing (4) with allocated overload clutch in the configuration of a multiple-disc clutch (6), the gearing of the drive units being preferably designed as load-compensation gearing. According to the invention, by means of an electronic control device (9), running-up of the motor on no load when the multiple-disc clutch (6) is opened and subsequently a smooth start-up of the conveyor or the plough systems is effected by controlled or regulated control actuation of a solenoid valve (7) allocated to the multiple-disc clutch (6). In the process, pressure is slowly applied to the multiple-disc clutch in the start-up phase so that the force passed into the chain (1) slowly increases until the face conveyor or the plough system has started.
