The appliance has a flat box provided with a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen (10) comprising eight lines of eighteen characters each. The screen has four adjacent control buttons - two (20, 30) beneath the screen marked validation, and summary, and two situated at the ends of the display marked with left and right handed arrows. A cursor (12) may be moved along the scale by operation of the arrow buttons, between a mark at the left hand side indicating absence of pain and a mark at the right hand side indicating maximum imaginable pain. The display is controlled by an electronic module with a memory storing the current value of the cursor position, and has a connection for extracting this information via a computer port (60).
