An active principle rich in isoflavones and the method of extracting it from the rhizome of Iris Florentina. Dried and ground Iris Florentina rhizome is solubilized at 20-500 g/l in one or more solvents and heated to 30-70 deg C for at least 30 minutes. The soluble and insoluble phases are separated and the active principle concentrated. The concentrated principle is subjected to sterilizing filtration to achieve a total mesophilic flora below 100 microbes/g and a total absences of yeasts and moulds. Independent claims are included for three cosmetic compositions for combatting wrinkles, dryness and loss of viscoelastic properties of the skin: (1) a gel/firming body cream containing silicone oil 1%; cetearyl octonoate 5%; polyacrylamide/C13-C14 isoparaffin/laureth-7 3%; claimed active principle 5%; preservative 0.5%; water qsp 100% (2) a day cream containing cetearyl octonoate 3%; polyacrylamide/C13-C14 isoparaffin/laureth-7 3%; claimed active principle 3%; preservative 0.5%; water qsp 100% (3) a fluid emulsion containing arachidyl alcohol/behenyl alcohol/arachidyl glucoside 4%; myristyl alcohol/myristyl glucoside 2%; cetearyl octonoate 4%; paraffin oil 6%; cetylstearyl alcohol 2%; claimed active principle 3%; preservative 0.5%; water qsp 100%.
