Shock testing method of sensitive equipment to relatively prolonged shock forces, such as those undergone by a missile hitting a target, by firing of a projectile into a relatively long smaller diameter ductile tube
Method in which a projectile (14) is fired at the end of a tube (12) of homogenous ductile material. The diameter of the largest frame of the projectile is greater than the inner diameter of the tube. As a result when the projectile enters the tube a shock wave is transmitted towards a test object (10) that is in contact with the tube as the tube expands and kinetic energy is absorbed. The test enables the acceleration law to which the component is subjected to be measured over time from the point of impact of the projectile in a reproducible manner. An Independent claim is made for a testing device enabling the resistance of a component to shock applying accelerations to be measured over long time periods of between 1 and 20 ms.
