Process for detecting differences between two populations (T, test; E, screen) of single-stranded nucleic acids. The complements of T are synthesized and divided into two equal fractions, I and II and: (a) I is hybridized to a set of nucleic acid probes; and (b) II is combined with E, before, or concomitantly with, hybridization to the set of probes. The hybridization results for (a) and (b) are compared.
