The invention relates to the human CCR2 receptor (CCR2-64V), in particular a polymorphic variant form of the human CCR2 receptor (CCR2-64I), and its involvement as a risk factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Variant CCR2 polynucleotides and polypeptides are provided together with methods for their use including screening and diagnostic methods in the development of atherosclerosis.
