PURPOSE: To record or transmit secret image information on an original in a state capable of surely reproducing it while holding its secrecy by converting read picture data into density data for a secret image and storing the density data. CONSTITUTION: When this system is started in a secret image storing mode, picture data read out by a picture element reader 1001 are converted into respective color data C, M, Y, B by a color converter 1002. A density converter 1003 applies density conversion based upon 'secrecy storing γ curve' to respective color data and a storage device 1006 records the converted data in a recording medium such as a floppy disk. When a secrecy reproducing mode permitted to a specific operator is set up, the secret image data read out from the recording medium by the device 1006 are processed by density conversion based upon 'secrecy reproducing γ curve' through the converter 1003 and the original image is reproduced through an image output device 1005. Since a recording or transmission signal level is turned to an unvisualized level by executing density conversion based upon a general γ conversion curve, secrecy can be held.
