A method for improving health through the production of nitrogen or nitric oxide precursors in the immediate vicinity of the body surface of an individual using bacteria adapted for the oxidation of ammonia and urea released from sweat is described. Local and systemic effects are described, including easing the symptoms of vascular diseases, enhancing sexual function, healing the skin and reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
