A composition for use in the therapeutic or prophylactic treatment of a streptococcal infection, comprising an effective amount of Group C streptococcal phage associated lysine enzyme and a carrier for delivering this enzyme to a mouth, throat, or nasal passage, wherein the lysine enzyme kills bacteria responsible for the infection. The above-described composition is useful for the therapeutic or prophylactic treatment of streptococcal infections or the alleviation of symptoms thereof.
