The machine is preferably a twin-roll one and is equipped with a control rod with a control handle (5) used to manoeuvre the machine. A steering stick (3) on the rod is used to drive the roll backwards and forwards, as well as to control its speed. The machine is kept working so long as a dead mans handle (4) biased towards a neutral position is urged towards the control handle so that a lifting cog wheel (16) is brough into contact with the manoeuvering gear wheel (11) associated with the steering stick, enabling movement of the stick to be transmitted via a control cable (8) to the machine control device, which is also biased towards a neutral position.
