Method for assessing the characteristic response of a medium to a transient excitation of a predetermined duration which has the effect that the medium to emit a series of signals over a period of time which is longer compared to the duration of the phenomenon transient excitation, in which the signals are detected, the duration of each interval between successive signals is measured and to represent the characteristic response relationship relating the interval between the transient phenomenon of excitation and emission of each signal with the extracted interval between each signal and the immediately preceding signal in the series of signals.
