PURPOSE: Provided is a composition for protection and regeneration of nerve cells containing the extract of Coptidis rhizoma. The composition prevents apoptosis in a nerve cell, induces differentiation of a neuronal stem cell and regenerates a neurite, a central nervous system and peripheral nerve, and reproduces neuromuscular junction. CONSTITUTION: The composition contains the extract of Coptidis rhizoma and is used for protection, growth promotion and regeneration of a nerve cell, and for prevention and treatment of nerve damage and nerve diseases. Coptidis rhizoma is extracted by using water or ethanol as a solvent, the extract of Coptidis rhizoma contains 20% or more berberine based on solids. The composition can be applied to foods and medicines.
