PURPOSE: A composition containing quercitrin separated from an ethanol extract of the bark of Illicium religiosum Sieb. et Zucc. is provided which has an excellent aldose reductase inhibiting effect, markedly inhibits accumulation of sorbitol and is effective in prevention and treatment of diabetic causing complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy or the like. CONSTITUTION: Quercitrin for prophylaxis and treatment of diabetic is quercitrin-3-o--L-rhamnoside. The bark of Illicium religiosum Sieb. et Zucc. is dried, ground, mixed 10 to 30 times(w/v) with ethanol and extracted at room temperature continuously 2 to 5 times. The extract is filtered with a filter paper of 5 to 10m, concentrated at 0 to 60deg.C under vacuum, fractionated by adding 10 to 30 times with distilled water and ethyl acetate and then concentrated.
