The present invention relates to a system for writing servo signals to a recording medium, comprising a full-width write head and a transducer with a clear head (s) with one or more slots. The full width write head is used to record signals on the full width of the recording medium and the erase head (s) are used to erase nulls in the servo signal pattern. The resulting servo pattern shows a very good match of signal characteristics between different parts of the resulting signal pattern because the written patterns mode is written in the same pass by the same write head. The use of finely manufactured and arranged erase head (s) allows to obtain highly accurate signal patterns.
