Coin testing device has a guide device that feeds input coins past a scanning device (9). Signals from the scanning device are compared in a comparison unit with output signals generated dependent on the result of the comparison. The guide device (5) is configured so that the coins automatically pass the scanning device that scans the coins as they pass by it. The scanning device comprises a linear array of detectors (111-11n). An Independent claim is made for a method for checking or testing coins inserted into a coin-operated machine.
